DAL-DFW flights are not unheard of for AA. GC Map shows bith JFK-LGA and DAL-DFW as being 11 miles, with FLL-MIA 21 miles.Originally Posted by High Technology
Flew from LGA to JFK due to equipment failure warning light right after take off on AA in mid-2000s. Of course a fully fueled plan is too heavy to land back on LGA's short runways.

Back when BWI was still a US hub, DCA-BWI-[destination] wasn't uncommon. At 30 miles, it's 9 miles further than FLL-MIA which clocks in at 21.
I also flew MO on the 32 miles ITH-ELM (mostly FH-227s but the occasional BAC 1-11) in the early 70s; that switched to CV-580s after the AL merger

So you suffered with Mohawk and Allegheny, aka Slowhawk and Agony? This must have been part of the direct service from ITH to PIT with four stops along the way.Originally Posted by jrl22

Back in the '90s, US was a pretty good airline and damned convenient for someone who was DCA based. What happened post 9/11 is another story...Originally Posted by MSPeconomist

I've been an airliner nut since about age 5, I didn't drive until midway thru my senior year, my schedules didn't synch up w friends or random offers of rides ... it really wasn't "suffering" at all, and it sure beat 6-8 hours on a Greyhound bus
I was on the EA positioning flight FLL-MIA several times in the '80s. I also was on New York Air scheduled DCA-LGA that went over to IAD to escape the curfew.
But I have also been on the shortest scheduled route in the world, the 1.7 mile hop from Westray to Papa Westray in the Orkneys. That one usually takes from two to three minutes but the day I took it over, the winds were such that I timed the Loganair Britten-Norman Islander wheels up to down in one minute eleven seconds.

I flew from Keesler AFB (BIX) to Gulfport MS,(GPT) in a Navy C9 (DC9) once. Took 5 minutes I believe to travel the 8.7 miles. We flew to GPT to board fuel that was not available at BIX

Actually, we flew FLL-MCO on operate L1011 aircraft, but it was very short flight. There is no beverage service. We went to ORD to see her cousin. I remember where we went to Chicago for Thanksgiving trip back on November 25, 1992. What happened our flight to ORD is delayed. I don't really remember what happened the aircraft. We wait for another hours to leave from MCO. We were connecting the flight to ORD.Originally Posted by us2

the flight likely went back to MSP; while they boarded SNA-MSP pax, they only had to fuel for ONT, so could use a lower thrust setting for takeoff and climbout (and every .01 EPR on a 727 made a big difference in the noise pattern)
Not the shortest, but I once did JFK-BOS in the middle seat of the last row on a BA 747. Original flight was LHR-BOS but diverted to JFK due to a blizzard in Beantown. 8 1/2 hour delay due to WX. Not fun. Deplaned in BOS at like 2:30 AM.
