As a PM who dropped down to GM on March 1, I'm 21 of 22 for upgrades with a 23rd flight on a CRJ. I fly weekends on LUT fares.

So done at the gate as opposed to getting the magic email.

To me, getting upgraded while still in the gatehouse is "winning the gate lottery". Getting upgraded after boarding the flight and taking your seat in Y is a "battlefield upgrade" (which has happened to me exactly twice in 29 years).

The best upgrades of all are those that occur on TATL flights when Y is oversold, and you only learn about them at the check-in counter (that has happened to me 4 times) and is a big, big surprise.

So far this year I'm at 100% for eligible upgrades:

Monday morning SAT-ATL U/R -6 days
Sunday evening ATL-SAT Y/R at the gate
Wednesday morning SAT-MEM U/R at the gate (equipment change from a RJ to a CR9)
Thursday evening MEM-LAX T/F (original flight delayed so was able to select F for an alternate flight)

However, it is getting harder than last year to get upgraded at the window.

As a lowly FO my stats pretty much reflect that... 1 for 4 eligible flights; hope I can keep 25% but not counting on it.

(Although two of them I switched onto at the last moment so I took what seats were available. First time in maybe a year or two I wasn't in EC or an exit row in Y... the difference was shocking IMHO :( Getting home 8 hours early made up for that though.)

BTW, 8 for 8 at my new carrier in the last 2 weeks since status match which is amazing since I had never put one foot on one of their airplanes before the match. Have not seen more than 4 names (most have been 2 or less!) on an airport UG list either, quite a difference from the 70 - 80+ I was regularly seeing on DL. I'll miss the ATL Porsche rides (they were picking me up every time I had to switch terminals there) but that's about it. Buh bye DL!

I've moved on too. Now doing UA and believe it or not getting more UG"s there as a 1 K vs DM on UA. Just knew had to make a decision early in the year and made the jump. Glad I did. Also got a great free business class ticket to LHR for June at 100,000 miles on UA. Won't even go there on what it would cost and the routing on DL!

2013 Upgrade Success Thread

ATL-based, 22 eligible flights for the first quarter, and have 19 upgrades to show for it. 3 misses are DL 16 (not surprising) & 2 DTW-ATL flights. Fares have been about 60% LUT. Save the transcons, nearly all upgrades that happen are hitting T6. I'm lucky enough to be able to pick my flight times fairly carefully, so I'm sure that helps.

2/6 on eligible segments as an FO. Most fares LUT type fares. Did get the upgrade with my wife as a companion (no status) Sunday morning CLT-MSP. The other one to clear was DTW-BUF on a Wed afternoon in Feb. so the odds were in my favor. Two more opportunities in April, a T and a B fare.

Only 3 UG's so far this year - LAX-SFO. Other than that, nothing. Highest I've gotten was #5 out of 12 coming back from MCO. Everything else this year has had me mid-teens on a list of 25-30. Lots of ATL-LAX in there, but also LAX-MIA, MIA-ATL and some others.

Frankly, as an FO, did you expect much more that than for upgrades?

Last year my UG's were about 80-90%, so yeah, I did. I was even making UG's from MSP, DTW and ATL. My flights are the same so far in 2013.

That is really impressive, truly. I did not do that well as a GM in 2011 (I was not able to travel in 2012 due to illness, but I am traveling again now).

Apparently chalk it up to dumb luck. I have to admit, much of that was SFO-LAX, but still some DL hub UG's as mentioned. I when I started missing even my SFO-LAX legs this year.

JesseRohr Mar 27, 2013 4:34 am

I've already missed more UG's as a DM this year than I have the last three years of DM combined. Latest was Monday's JAX - ATL at 8:40am. I was 1 of 49 not to clear.

Other than capacity controls and optimizing the fleet, can anyone give us any logical reasons why there seem to be fewer upgrades this year (such as JesseRohr's example here) than there have been in the last few years?
