Deciphering a DL fare basis code

I recently booked a roundtrip on DL from DEN to DCA. I'm wondering if anyone can help me translate the fare basis as I can't seem to locate the fare rule now that I've booked the ticket.

The fare basis code is TR07UPNQ.

T fare.
Fare class is always first letter of fare base.

Did this book into first or A?

Usually "UP" in the fare means it's an upgrade fare, in which a T-UP would be weird, though nothing is too weird in this world of FCM.

This is a T fare. I believe the 07 means a 7-day advance purchase is required. The UP means an instant upgrade to first (usually A inventory). The N means the fare is non-refundable. I don't know what the R and Q mean other than identifying a specific fare.

T-UP's are rare birds. It's not often I come across one.

I found it Friday morning on DL's site as an "A" class fare in First. It was actually 50 cents cheaper than the Economy fare for the same flights. $387.20 RT. Something about it seems a bit too good to be true which is why I posted the fare basis. I checked the same flights Friday night and the "A" fare was over $1400 RT and the cheapest Economy "L" was over $600 RT.

Why on earth would DL be selling First for less than Economy? Might it have something to do with the effects of the hurricane?

The more important question is why are you asking a logical question concerning airline pricing??

The only time I've come across a T-UP fare is when Airtran was having a sale on first class seats and Delta was matching it. I'm not sure what the reason is here.

Over the past couple of years I've started doing a lot more travel for work and finally am to the point where I am noting some of these issues for myself. I have determined that it is beyond the ken of mortal humans to make sense of airline pricing.

I have also recently been doing a lot of travel on KLM so my Delta Skymiles got a good work out last year (this year not so much). What frustrated me is that my company who graciously allows us to accumulate mileage on our own, still purchases only the lowest price fares imaginable which means that despite about a trip a month from the West Coast to the Netherlands or UK I've rarely been able to get an "Upgradable" class of ticket so my mileage accumulates nicely but not in a way I could utilize it. Not that I haven't lucked out and gotten a few bumps up the ladder and in a couple cases been able to finagle an upgradable ticket. but still....)

The R stands for round trip AFAIK.... If it was TA the A would stand for one way.

The Q I have no idea

To borrow a quote from Dave Barry from probably the early 90's:

The airline fare computer is massively powerful computer, capable of perfoming thousands of price adjustments per second, that someone apparently spilled Hawaiian Punch into the brains of.

The 7 in the fare basis probably means it is a 7 day advance purchase.

Airline pricing is like the Internal Revenue Service. If it sounds logical it is probably wrong

The T-UP is not less than Y, it's less than more heavily-restricted and less available discounted economy. Essentially, you are buying a FC seat in return for restrictions which a full fare flyer might not be able to live with. If you can, it's a great deal and points to the importance of doing the research.

Too many people give up on FC just figuring that it's too expensive. While that's probably the case more often than not, it's by no means universally true.

Otherwise they would have had to give the seat to a Medallion who flew 75k or 125k miles......
