Avoiding Bulkhead Seats in First

There are a few planes out there that have horrible bulk heads in F. There is one 757 for example, I don't recall which one, that has some very old style business class seats (I think mostly used to HNL). The left side bulk head has the leg room of coach. If I were to ever be given that seat having paid for it I would demand a refund.

I don't want to see the OP complain about the lack of upgrades or diluted PM/DM ranks. I take what I can get and move on. If you don't want an upgrade don't check the box when you buy the ticket. Or don't buy a ticket to fly on a plane that you do not like.

+1 to avoiding bulkhead F. Now, if DL was more strict on F pax only placing one thing in the bin and thus I knew I would have space, then I woudn't mind so much.

I'm contemplating doing what most of you decry b'c I'm flying one leg where I will happily take my upgrade, but meeting someone else who has no status at my connecting airport and will fly with her the rest of the way. I've been told by the elite desk and a gate agent that there's no way to specify flight segments for upgrade--you request all (each way) or nothing (each way).
So if I'm upgraded away from my companion, I will attempt to regain my seat next to her by offering the new occupant of my EC seat the opportunity to move up to FC.
The only other option I see is to selflessly uncheck "upgrade requested" and fly coach both legs.

I'm for talking it over with the GA ahead of time. However, be aware that it may not turn out the way that you anticipate. A couple of weeks ago, I told the GA that I didn't want the bulkhead (only F seat left) on a 2/3 full flight and that I'd be happy with a row to myself in EC -- there was only one other person in the entire EC section. A few minutes before push back, GA came on the plane and asked me if I wanted 2D or 3B since there were no shows. As I settled into 3B the FA told E- pax that they could change to any seat, including EC. Just about every seat in EC, including the row I had vacated, got filled in minutes.

Why isn't it an option to talk to the GA before the second flight boards and/or before the second flight's GA processes gate upgrades, telling the GA that you have a companion on this segment and want to sit together? Did the companion already pay for an EC seat next to you?
Sounds like this is a case where he doesn't want the second seg UG at all.... and doesn't want to lose his EC seat. Fair enough, but the only way to achieve that with certainty is to remove the UG request from both segs. Honorable decision, but one that most would deem painful.
