My first thought was same as yours, simply speak with the GA before the flt. But as I thought about it, this only works if the UG is BF. What if he receives a window UG? Now he's up front AND the EC seat is lost.
Sounds like this is a case where he doesn't want the second seg UG at all.... and doesn't want to lose his EC seat. Fair enough, but the only way to achieve that with certainty is to remove the UG request from both segs. Honorable decision, but one that most would deem painful.
