Delta/Coke Napkins - Strong VOC odor!

Hello -

I have been complaining to every FA recently - the relatively new Delta/Coca-Cola napkins used in flight have about 1/3 of their surface printed in red - patterns which also release a very strong odor - typical for VOC (volatile organic compounds).

I am not sure this has been addressed, but some of these VOC's are known as cancer-causing agents. I would not speculate further at this point, until I hear from other frequent flyers, or more documented viewpoints.

With all due respect to the OP, for everything else that we complain about, we're going to add "your cocktail napkins can cause cancer" to the list?

I was on a flight last week ATL-IND and the flight attendant was making kind of a spectacle of the napkins prior to departure, having the other FA's and the Pilot smell them, telling them how good they smelled and then watching their reactions to the bad odor when she put the stack up to their nose.

She said she had people decline them because of the odor.

What's a Hapkin?

Pepsi napkins don't stink, just the Coke ones.

Whatever stinky ink or bleaching process they use on the paper is really nasty. They remind me of the super cheap napkins I've seen in touristy restaurants over in Asia, which is where I suspect these things were printed up.

Yes, the napkins do have an odor.

What makes you sure the odor is caused by VOCs or that they are dangerous and unhealthy VOCs?

If the odor is not soylent green, it could possibly be from an environmentally-friendly ink, right?

They are frankly cheap napkins, they do better to advertise Coke than absorb liquid. Does Coke/Delta know this does more harm to their brand than help?

Interesting observation IATJ. Check out this link that I found while looking for more info on these malodorous wipes:

Like you say--better for the brand, probably not so much for the napkin maker.
