Inventory question.

I have a domestic segment in economy for an international award ticket in BE as award inventory in F for that segment did not exist.

My question is when the upgrade inventory opens up, do I, as a DM who has a BE award ticket have a higher priority than
  1. another diamond who has a domestic award ticket in economy
  2. another diamond who has a paid economy ticket (not an upgrade at purchase fare)

If one assumes that I have paid for an upgrdabale seat F if it existed. If an upgrade seat does open up, then I should have a higher priority than any other DM waiting for an upgrade.

ON the other hand, one can argue that since I am booked in economy for that segment, the fact that an upgradeable F seat has already been paid for with miles is sort of buried and not visible to the automated system.

Is the inventory for F award not the same as that for an upgrade?

My only experience with this was recently. I had MBJ-ATL-DTW booked as an award with MBJ-ATL in F, and ATL-DTW in Y (despite booking 6 months out, not a single seat was available...)

As a lowely Plat, I missed the upgrade ATL-DTW by about 4 people. I think I was 6 with 2 seats available.

Your Y segment is likely booked in (N) class. As such it falls at the end of the DM class hierarchy for upgrades (YBMHQKLUTEN). So you will be behind all other DMs on paid tickets and behind any DMs who obtained their award ticket before you. (Effectively, you agreed to be booked in a Y seat when you booked your ticket.)

If (R) opens up, you could rebook if your other segments are still available.

So you can't just rebook the one segment onto your existing ticket?

It's no worse than booking an award ticket in economy then. No, I can't because I am within the 72 hour window.

I think there was some discussion on this... I'm not sure...

Effectively, that's what happens when F/J isn't available on one or more segments... it's the equivalent of booking a Y ticket for those segments.

I see what you mean. But the other side of the coin is that if R inventory opens up, one, who has already paid for an F seat with miles should have a priority. Of course this is my self serving view, but it's not an unreasonable view.
