Effectively, that's what happens when F/J isn't available on one or more segments... it's the equivalent of booking a Y ticket for those segments.
I see what you mean. But the other side of the coin is that if R inventory opens up, one, who has already paid for an F seat with miles should have a priority. Of course this is my self serving view, but it's not an unreasonable view.
