"combining" reservations?

Weirdo newbie question here...

So I'm off on a trip soon. Fairly confident I'll get upgraded.

After getting my ticket, my girlfriend decided to join me and bought a ticket for same flight. She's got no status.

Q1) Since I'm not about to waltz into first class and leave her, is there any way to "combine" our reservations so that, though the likelihood goes down, she could get upgraded?

Q2) Assuming no, if I trade boarding passes with her is anyone going to freak out? Figure it would be nice of me :-)

Maybe I should just suck it up and decline the upgrade....

If she is a skymiles member, you can call and request a companion upgrade for her.

You won't be able to combine the reservations. What you can do is after your upgrade window, call in and request a companion upgrade. If hers doesn't clear, switch seats with her.

Mrs. & I are both GM. Last week, DTW-FLL we are both upgraded. FLL-DTW I'm #2 & she's #3. I get the upgrade. I switch boarding passes with her in the jetway. We get home - marital bliss!

I agree with the others. Don't decline the upgrade. If she doesn't get it, give her yours. If it's a short flight, such that sitting apart isn't a big deal, it's a guaranteed winner. If it's a long flight, then declining it might be your optimal strategy though.

I agree with the others. Request a companion upgrade for her.

I would also recommend that when assigning seats before the upgrades process to give her the aisle/window and you take the middle. That way if you get upgraded and she doesn't no one is stuck in the middle.
