So, I'm booking a one-way to EWR and as usual the one-ways are more expensive and the SLUT fares aren't offered. This time, an H fare is offered for 381.00 and an A fare is offered for 378.50. Both the H and A fares are non-refundable. So for $2.50 less, I can book a confirmed first class seat versus waiting for the possible upgrade. Negative FCM!
You should link to that thread. Obviously, this is a case of DL having to pay you to UG to FC. :D |
I have a trip at the end of the month that was about $150 cheaper for an A fare than coach. I'm not complaining though.

Once the flight hit the 10k mark, the FC FA spent 15 minutes helping the coach FA prepare her cart. Once that was past, well over an hour since boarding, the FC FA had her first interaction with the FC passengers. A single pass for drink requests followed by a single pass of the snack basket. As we got apparent that there would be no more service so I had to press the call button to get a second beverage (which was answered by the coach FA) while all of the other FC passengers sat with empty glasses. I kept asking myself why anyone would pay extra money for this?
closer to BNA my beverage had been empty for 15 minutes and it was Granted, I've had far superior service but if Delta hopes to pull off this move to FCM you'd think they would ensure the service was a little more consistent? |
Bigger challenges with FCM and load factors is having F seats for irregular ops. Our connecting flight was changed out of LAX. We had 4 seats in F coming from HNL, so trying to get the 4 F seats out of LAX was a nightmare, we were lucky it was Saturday, I am sure on a weekday it would have been impossible.

This seems a no brainer to me, just need to convince the client that it was cheaper to fly first :O
Economy (S) $1,003.70 1 ticket left at this price Equipped with Economy Comfort First (A) $790.70 |
Flying DTW/LAS in Nov and was around $220 more to buy up to first. On a T fare going out and first is wide open but only a few seats coming back and on an M fare. Ended up with an $18 credit for the agent to keep me in coach going out and putting me in first coming back plus I get 875 more MQM's.
No wonder Delta has such a lousy first class product and upgrades are harder to get for elites. |

I wonder what the buy up to first amount will be if you buy the S fare.
I can see this being abused though for people who book direct and bill a client. I am taking the credit off the bill for my vegas trip, but what is to stop someone from booking an M fare, printing off the receipt and submitting it to their client or employer for reimbursement and then calling the diamond desk and booking into first and getting a credit on their credit card and not reporting it? |

Me, I'd upgrade, get the credit, and tell them I got a credit due to my airline status (without providing details) and just subtract that from the total requested. If they said they couldn't process that line item without more information, I'd tell them they were welcome to ignore it. |
Not sure if this falls into FCM, but for the first time (that I remember), I was offered the chance to upgrade my morning DTW->BOS flight for $139 (?) while I was checking in via the app. DM on a U fare, my upgrade hasn't cleared (#3 on the list right now). 5 FC seats available, 40 in coach on a MD90.

I'm flying DTW/las next month. Outbound is a t fare with plenty of seats up front but coming back I am on an m fare with only a few seats up front. Called the diamond desk about upgrading on just the return or if there was much price diff to get a b fare for the bonus MQMs. Only $19 more for first. She said upgrading to a b would be more and didn't ask the price. I'd be a fool not to pay the $19 seeing no EC or exit aisles in back were available

New one for me today (apologies if already noted up thread):
1st for 1 upgrade so approached GA 5 min before boarding to see when she was going to clear them. She told me they are not allowed to clear until 30 min before scheduled departure or DL would flag her for it. I can understand wanting to sell the seat but why clear after boarding starts. :/ |

Waiting to the 30 minute mark as been fairly standard over the years in my experience, although I have seen them run it earlier at times. Others have recently reported about being more rigorous in adhering to the 30 minute mark. There are reasons other than FCM. If you experience IRROP's or want to do a last minute SDC, it's nice to have seats still available in FC. I did a last minute SDC at BWI (about 40 minutes prior to departure) a few weeks ago as my scheduled flight looked like it would be delayed due to a late arriving inbound. Since the gate had not run the upgrade list yet, I was still able to get an FC seat.
It did work out in my favor in Sept for a DTW/SFO flight. I got dropped off at the airport and the upgrade list on the flight before mine hadn't started boarding mine and my fare class wasn't available so I wasn't able to SDC. I asked the GA on the earlier flight about my chances for at least getting an aisle EC east after she cleared the UG list and she told me she was going to clear the SB list first and then do the upgrade list between zones Sky and 1 and said I would clear with no problem so that did work in my favor on a long flight. |
