Ding! We have a winner. Flew LIN-LHR last night. I really liked the AZ (XM, technically) A320s I flew on for this trip, but the bag storage was a bit odd/disconcerting. The FAs didn't even seem to think twice about doing it, however.

That's what I'm wondering, too. Say a passenger way in the back of a DL 757 has three seats to him/herself, has a roller bag that won't fit under the seats, and can't find space overhead. Could that passenger just decide to strap the bag to one of the neighboring seats without triggering a safety concern from a DL FA?

I think you've got that a bit wrong. It's not DWKWIA, but DYKWMBI after a gate check.
Do You Know Where My Bag Is.
I am sitting in St Thomas as I write this. My friend had to gate check her carry on, and of course, DL lost it. She lost 1/2 day going to local shops to get clothes. I am quite sure she would have loved to have had her bag strapped into a seat.
You are more than welcome to enjoy the gate check experience. To each his/her own.

It can be amusing to see how standards and practices vary wordwide, but I wouldn't encourage this. Big bags, and surpluses of bags, belong in the hold. I would like to see strong enforcement of 1+1 (yes, three is more than 1+1), consistent use of gate baggage sizers, and a cost penalty to people who check bags at the gate (not a freebie).

Personally, I wouldn't trust a seat belt adequately secure luggage in heavy turbulence.

Was the bag surrendered at the gate on a connecting flight or the final flight?
Was it gate check or gate valet?
If it was gate checked, did your traveling companion check the carousel or wait on the JetWay?
If it was gate valet, and a connecting flight was it collected on the JetWay?
There may have been a miscommunication with the staff about intentions to Check or Valet...

To the OP of the lost bag post - clarifications would be helpful:
Was the bag surrendered at the gate on a connecting flight or the final flight?
Was it gate check or gate valet?
If it was gate checked, did your traveling companion check the carousel or wait on the JetWay?
If it was gate valet, and a connecting flight was it collected on the JetWay?

I'd say that a connection was involved in losing a gate-checked bag.
