Skip flight segment without changing ticket?
Hello forum,
I'm wondering if I can skip the first segment in a two-segment flight (i.e. board where I would normally change planes) without changing the ticket? I am checking in online. No checked bags. What will happen when I show my boarding pass at the gate? Does anybody have experience with this?
Thanks!

The scanner will beep and you won't be able to board your flight because your ticket is already cancelled. There is NO WAY you can do this. You can only skip the last segment of your ticket and even then Delta might reprice your ticket (but they usually won't).

I don't believe DL immediately cancels your ticket if you miss the first segment, as you may be SDC'ing to another flight later in the day. That said, even SDC* is only allowed from original origination to original destination, so it still won't work to board at an intermediate point. And welcome to FT!
*SDC = Same-Day Confirmed--it allows you to switch to another flight on the same day, earlier or later than your original flight. The change can be made within 3 hours of when the first flight you want to take departs.

How could this be happening with SDC? Once you SDC then your are on your new flight and your old one is gone. You can't just miss your flight and then call 1/2 a day later to SDC. Anyway, I have seen them take 'no rides' out of the system pretty quickly and I would not even think about trying this. If you think you might miss your flight ... always call and get the segment taken out.

But what the OP has suggested won't work - the first segment must be boarded prior to the second segment being eligible to board.

Well,
Actually, when the gate agent closes the flight out, the "No Show" Manager(automated system) cancels the flights in the PNR.
I have seen countless PNRs(Passenger Name Records) canceled and have the remarks of:
Canceled by No-Show Manager.
So, in the end, when the Op does not take their outbound FLT, then all other flights will cancel.

Yes you can, according to

There's nothing there that says you can't SDC for a later flight, and people here have reported successfully SDC'ing to a later flight.

I've done it many times. It's always risky as there might not be room available. I normally call before i plan on missing my flight to make sure there is room on other flights, then wait for the 3 hr window and call back.after
however,in regards to the OP you can't take the second segment without taking the first.

I've had IT issues (imagine that) result in DL thinking I hadn't flown a segment when I had. I had no issues with connecting. When I called a week later to inquire about the miles not posting, the segment was still showing as unflown.
YMMV, and I wouldn't do this on purpose.
