Love the story, but couldn't help but wonder -- who the heck travels with a checkbook? What is this, 1926?

I agree...the airlines started the baggage wars under the guise of "fuel-surcharge" or some such nonsense and now seem content to stand-by and watch the fallout.

Which brings up an interesting point - I always put my carry-on in the bin across the aisle from me so I can keep an eye on it.

I never had a flight pre-checked bag fee days that was delayed or held up because we spent an extra 15-20 minutes on the ground gate checking carry on luggage on a non-regional jet. Revenue should determine what they are making off of checked bag fees for bag #1 and disperse it among the millions of tickets sold annually.

Props to the OP...

Shame this happened... but impressive on typing up a document, printing it, and delivering it to the crushers ^

Personally I would never shove my bag in but if some guy shoved an invoice in my face my fist would be in theirs prove your crap wasn't broken before.

Knowing my friend, a fist to his face would have definitely increased the bill.

Since it would have been absurd to carry a crushed food box made for traveling in the hope that someone would very visibly re-crush it, the only thing the other passenger could have credibly questioned would have been the sunglasses. With those bent forward (front of each lens facing the other) at about a 40-degree angle, pretty much in the shape of an edge of the suitcase, and their case clearly stressed as well, the cause of the bending was obviously the other bag's pressure.

Still, the "invoice" was simply a request for compensation, and if anyone wanted to contest it, they could have flown, like my friend, back to Florida at a later date. That the female passenger didn't argue showed that she recognized her culpability.

For the record, I think simple assault pretty would pretty nearly disqualify anyone from challenging the bill, and that, if punches were an acceptable way to challenge the aggressive, the "Crushers" themselves might have been on the receiving end. Fortunately, that's not at all the case.

Sunglasses: badly bent, even in semi-hard case

The sunglasses were in their own semi-hard travel case within another bag per the OPs initial post. They were not just loose in the bag. There is no reason to expect them to get broken in there. The case they were in was broken too.

You should desist making attacks on the OP friend.

You really put stuff in the seat pocket??? They are absolutely disgusting and never cleaned out.

and have you ever found room in the literature pocket when you are sitting in the bulkhead?

Well... I do. (Carry checks.)

I am one of the most "wired", techie-geek people I know... but I still carry a checkbook. I'm rarely home. And I occasionally want to write a check. Heck, I mailed off two while traveling last week, both were donations to small non-profit type organizations. About to send a third to the guy who cuts my grass (that I'm never home to deal with myself).

The story is definitely entertaining.

I think its BS but whatever.

If someone gave me an invoice, I wouldn't touch it, I wouldn't talk to the person, and if they obstructed my exit I would ask the FA to ask the person to please not assault me and call police if necessary.

Not legal advice just what I would do.
