I agree with other posters that it depends in large measure on where you're flying from and where you're flying to. As a hub captive (SLC), I found upgrades were pretty rare on most flights as a FO, but my ratio improved significantly as a GM. I tended to do a lot of hub-to-hub flights back then however (SLC-DTW, SLC-CVG). I have a friend who's FO and seems to get upgraded quite a bit, but he takes a lot of redeyes and flies to less popular destinations.
