SDC changes fare class

When doing SDC is it normal for the new flights to be booked in full Y class instead of the original paid fare class. About 3 weeks ago I did a SDC on a SAT-JFK ticket that was originally booked in L and the new flights were booked in Y and I earned 50% class of service bonus for both segments. Today I did another SDC on a U ticket and again both of the new flights were booked into Y. The miles have not posted yet but I imagine that they will earn the class of service bonus since it shows Y instead of U. Does this usually happen or was I just lucky?

You got lucky... its supposed to be rebooked in the same fare class but you probably got an agent who just wanted to do it quickly. How did the upgrade work out?

Not sure about mileage bonus really, but I did a SDC from SLC-STL recently and was surprised when the CSR told me that I now had a $9.38 credit because of the difference in fares... Never had that happen before!?!? Not complaining at all, just a little confused?!?!

I was wondering if at the time of requesting the change that if there is no longer availabilty in the original paid fare class on the new flights, maybe the agent is forced to book them in Y. Maybe if you were booked in L and the new flights show L0,U0,T0 then the agent has no way of booking you into those classes.

Either hurried or lazy or combination. It seems that it is happening less often than before.

In that case, the agent is not supposed to allow you to SDC at all. At least according to some fare rules. A T fare I just bought has a stipulation that to SDC, the new flight must have the same fare class available (i.e., T fare).

When I have done SDC (or with weather waivers, next day confirmed), the flights how up as Y but are credited with the purchased fare class (so no bonus EQMs for me).

Incorrect, that was NW's rules. On DL, if you have a Coach ticket and the system shows Y1, you get the seat REGARDLESS of your fare class.

An area where DL is actually more generous than NW, shocking!

p.s. I know NWA allowed SDC up to 24 hours...

I remember it to be this way with NW using the flynow option, but as far as I know with DL there just has to be at least Y1 available to be able SDC onto a flight, even with a purchased T fare.

I guess that one should always SDC with an agent instead of using a kiosk, and hope for human error to factor in occasionally.

Yep. Crazy thing is sometimes Y1 means the flights is already oversold yet DL is still selling tickets.

PSS/SMS would never, kiosk would never. Hurried airport agent would.

That's probably because most SMS don't know how to process a SDC.
