Welcome to FT also. Now you're getting a taste of what it is like when we all gang up on an issue until we drag "truth" from rumor. Be careful, this can become addictive; just look at all those FTE (>10,000 posts) lurking about to catch all the errors we newbies make.
We are opinionated! check out OMNI/PR and Travel & Dining. After many years of constant travel I find that FT is one of my favorite places to go. Sick, certainly, but in a hotel with an internet connection what else to do?

Yup what they said. On NW it DID matter and in-fact there were some creative ways to check-in and still get an EUA but not on DL. The process is much cleaner on DL and when you do check-in you will be slotted in line for the battlefield upgrade based on fare class (also did not matter on NW), status, and time of UG request, so essentially booking. You can check in 1 hour prior to departure and if you qualify you will be number one on the list. I like the DL method but I do worry that the focus on fare class could easily lead to reduction in upgradeable fares where NW took that out of the criteria (other than "Full fare" Y) and went with time of ticketing as well as check-in time which are fare class independent.

For the first time I'm within 24 hours and not yet upgraded on a DL flight. It's ridiculous as it's a CRJ-900 on a Saturday morning with 8 of 12 F seats still open and has been V0 for many days. But that's not the point. If I check in now, and DL does release some inventory into V before departure, the upgrade status on my reservation will presumably go from "Requested" to "Available". Can I grab an upgrade at that time? Can another elite who is not already checked in grab one?

There have been posts stating that the pax not checked-in would get the upgrade. I don't have any specific experience to confirm or contradict that statement.

In my experience (and I had this occur with a co-worker) is that if you are checked in and V inventory opens it doesn't upgrade you. This is why I never check in until within 3 hours of said flight (when the flight goes to airport control) if I can help it.
They very well could have fixed it by now, but I'll just not gamble. I don't need to check in that early anyway.
