Yup what they said. On NW it DID matter and in-fact there were some creative ways to check-in and still get an EUA but not on DL. The process is much cleaner on DL and when you do check-in you will be slotted in line for the battlefield upgrade based on fare class (also did not matter on NW), status, and time of UG request, so essentially booking.
For the first time I'm within 24 hours and not yet upgraded on a DL flight. It's ridiculous as it's a CRJ-900 on a Saturday morning with 8 of 12 F seats still open and has been V0 for many days. But that's not the point. If I check in now, and DL does release some inventory into V before departure, the upgrade status on my reservation will presumably go from "Requested" to "Available". Can I grab an upgrade at that time? Can another elite who is not already checked in grab one?
