Who qualifies for preferred seats?

Flying JFK-PDX, SEA-JFK next week. both flights on 737. i am a only a silver. i checked the seat map, and 20 out of the 24 preferred seats in Y have been taken. since there are only 16 C seats (15 of which still show available), my odds are not looking good. or so i think. are only medallion member allowed to reserve the preferred seats in Y? if so, i am assuming i will have little chance of upgrade, being that i am only a silver?

I believe the companion has to be on the same PNR as the medallion.
