Major Redemption Changes on Orbitz MC

Just wanted to inform everyone about a mailing I just received about a major change in the redemption rates for the Orbitz Master Card. If you previously used the card, you could get a free flight valued at $400 for just 20,000 points. Discounts were to be had for other points amounts but I cannot recall the exact requirements. NEW rules effective 8/31/05 are:

10,000 points - $100 discount
20,000 - $200 discount
30,000 - $300 discount
40,000 - $400
50,000 - $500

Basically the benefits have been cut in half!! At least they are giving us till 8/31/05 to redeem at the old level! Looks like I will be claiming several 20,000 points free tickets before this takes effect.

orbitz credit card

The old system had a $100 discount for every 7500 points, and a free flight for 20K points. So, yes, a free flight will cost twice as many points under their new system. What really angered me was that their letter touted the new system as being "easier to understand". So in addition to cutting the benefits, they have also insulted my intelligence!

Yeah, what is really insulting to our intelligence is why anyone would want this card now. Gee, I can get a Citibank card that gives me 1% on everything and 5% on gas and supermarkets or a card that gives me 1%, I have to use it at $100 increments, and it has to be at Orbitz

IMHO, this card was not very good BEFORE the changes. Too many restrictions. Now it is almost a joke. Hard to understand their reasoning in putting forth such a poor product. Not competitive at all with many, many others.

Card worked for me because I booked several Business Class tickets to Europe on it a year. If the flight was 6k and I booked it on Orbitz and paid with the Orbitz card I got 12,000 points. Under the new terms it however doesn't make much sense!

Travelocity seems to have a pretty good deal, I think it's 7500 points per $100 certificate on travel through them. Not as good as Starwood, but then again what is
