FAQ- What is EMV contactless?
EMV contactless is a form of contactless/NFC that uses the same security and encryption that is used when inserting a chip card into an EMV-enabled terminal. Other than not having to sign/enter a PIN for smaller transactions, the security is effectively the same as chip and PIN/chip and signature.
In contrast, MSD contactless is an older version that is designed just and only for the United States. This effectively uses much the same flow as a swiped card transaction with the same rules.
- What is CDCVM?
CDCVM stands for Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method. It's a method of telling the terminal that the customer verified their identity using their mobile device. Terminals that support it will waive the signature/PIN requirement typically in place for larger transactions, potentially saving time at checkout.
More info: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202527
- Does EMV contactless need to be supported to support CDCVM?
Typically, yes. (However, there are some exceptions below.)
- Why can't I tap my foreign-issued contactless card at most places in the US?
This is likely because the store does not support EMV contactless. Foreign issued contactless cards typically do not support MSD contactless since other markets have had EMV for quite some time. In contrast, most stores in the US have yet to get the necessary certifications/software for EMV contactless so they are typically MSD-only--if contactless is enabled at all. (See below for a list of stores where your card will likely work.)
- I paid for a purchase with Apple/Android/Samsung Pay and still had to sign for it.
Most likely, the store in question does not have EMV contactless enabled (see above question). However, there are instances where CDCVM does not work even with EMV contactless enabled. Restaurants that allow tip adjust, for example--where the tip amount is written on a paper receipt and entered by the staff later--cannot support CDCVM. It may simply be a matter of the merchant's processor or the POS software in use not supporting it too.
Another common reason is if you used a US-issued AmEx card with a mobile wallet. AmEx currently does not allow EMV contactless support in mobile wallets for these cards, so they always run as MSD contactless. Because of this, CDCVM is not supported (with very few exceptions, as noted below).
Note: if you used Samsung Pay, you may have paid with MST instead of NFC. Since MST emulates the magnetic pulses that the terminal receives when swiping a regular card, the normal magstripe rules apply.
- How can I tell whether EMV contactless was used?
An easy way to tell if you have Apple Pay is to pay with a Visa or MC while in airplane mode. Wallet will then show a transaction amount next to "Payment" for the card that was used. Alternatively, EMV-related information will typically print on the receipt (AID, etc.) if EMV contactless was used.

Found an interesting presentation the Debit Network Alliance made to the Federal Reserve explaining issues preventing CDCVM from being used for debit network transactions: https://www.federalreserve.gov/regre...g-20171018.pdf

Stopped by Marshalls today with a friend and when she went to pay, it showed the standard insert, tap, swipe graphic that are on a lot of mx915/925s. Looking at the receipt, it appears EMV contactless is enabled.

Also I see Great Clips with the new tablet pos system since May and now its on the MC contactless locator so it will probably be enabled along with the chip at other locations soon.

I'd assume so...it looks like what's been running on there before and also similar to Taco Bell, McDonald's, Five Guys, etc. I'm also guessing (but haven't confirmed) that TJMaxx and HomeGoods would also be getting this update.

Sunoco uses both Verifone Commander or Gilbarco Passport neither seem to support EMV contactless still. So if your Polish MC card does not have the msd path that would explain why it won't work. The only gas stations that have EMV contactless are NCR Radiant stations such as Speedway, Sheetz, Racetrac/Raceway, Kwik Shop/Turkey Hill and Kum & Go. A few other brands such as QuikTrip or 7-Elevens with iSC250's also have EMV contactless.
Natural Grocers still uses MSD ctls as it says 'Swiped' on my receipt and it seems Lowes Market out of Texas uses the same pos as Natural Grocers IT Retail.

Pump is MSD but they seem to have Contactless at their pumps (MSD Contactless).

Founds two more Mobil stations in rural Northern California with NFC on the pumps. It works fine in all forms (physical card or phone). It is still MSD. One station had Gilbarco registers and the other had Verifone registers. "Contactless" printed on both receipts from the pumps.

I reported this the other week at my location in Cupertino, CA as well. They still had handwritten cardboard inserts that say NO CHIP, but I'm hopeful that contactless payments will be enbaled along with EMV. The biggest gain is you enter the tip on the screen. There is no more tip adjust.

The TJMaxx that I went to today didn't have contactless, though it could still be rolling out.

I also want to add, it’s called TKMAXX in the UK because TJX owns Marshall’s in the US, and there’s a TJ Marshalls in the UK (much older than TJX). Due to the conflict of interest, unfortunately TJX has to be the one who changed. They creatively went up a letter that rhymes.
They do make it well known they’re part of TJX though. Says TJX all over.

So as mentioned above, TJMaxx doesn't have contactless yet.
However, it appears Petco and Smart & Final have EMV contactless now:
In addition, Costco finally upgraded the hardware on the car wash kiosks (and removed two of the four preexisting ones). I bought the car wash when I filled up gas, but considering that the car wash has coded as gas in the past, I expect contactless and EMV will work only when it does at the pumps:
Finally, contactless outside still doesn't work at the Shell I visited (and it was MSD only inside).

I remember talking months ago how an update to terminals broke contactless at Giant supermarket here for MC. Now it just dawned on me that I think they broke EMV contactless in general. As I compare two receipts now, the contactless one says "Payment type: VISA" and has no AID or anything else info on it, just Card number and AUTH# whereas iserted cip transaction shows as "Payment type VISA CREDIT" - and I think we've established that the difference between these two shows whether it's EMV or MSD, right? Also no AID on one but AID on the other seems to point this way.
It would also explain why my Polish MC and Revolut stopped working as contactless there (says "Not Authorized") but work when inserted.
