Best CC Program for China Southern redemption?

I am helping a family member improve her credit card strategy so she can fly to Guangzhou (CAN) or Hong Kong (HKG). She flies China Southern a few times a year in economy. She's based out of Corvallis, Oregon, so the nearest large airport is Portland (PDX). She typically flies PDX-LAX-CAN.

What would be the best credit card to get to accumulate miles or points to redeem for these flights? I am guessing a Delta-branded card?

Would she mind flying with another airline ? Would give you more options also a better plan would be perhaps to get a gold card or preferred and transfer miles from there

Hmm, I did a quick Google search and found that the following flight routes/airlines can travel from PDX-XXX-CAN:

- Delta, Asiana
- China Southern, Alaska
- China Southern, Air Canada
- Air Canada, Dragonair
- Korean Air, Alaska
- Hainan, Alaska
- United, ANA
- Eva Air, Alaska,
- JAL, Alaska
- Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, Alaska

Which gold card and which preferred card do you speak of?

Okay, so here's how I'm working out the airline transfers:

American Airlines card: redeem for American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Alaska
United card: redeem for United, Air Canada, Asiana, ANA
Chase Sapphire: redeem for American Airlines (via British Airways), United (and United partners)

So, it seems like the best option is to go with the Chase Sapphire?

Oh wow, I wasn't aware of this flexibility with the Starwood Preferred Guest credit card.

So, it seems if she gets the Chase Sapphire Preferred card & the Starwood Preferred Guest credit card, then it should cover all her bases.
