I tried BofA's one a long time ago. From what I remember it was a weird Java based thing that you access from their online banking portal. It seemed to work okay the one time I generated a virtual number. I honestly didn't feel the need to use it for online purchases though (I mostly stick to "well known" sites like Amazon, or otherwise use PayPal), so I forgot about it.
Actually, I just logged in to took a look and it seems to be Flash-based. A bit better in that it's more likely to be on one's machine, but may cause problems on a mobile device. That may be okay though considering that a fair number of apps let you use e.g. Apple Pay to pay for stuff now.

My wife and I each opened new Credit Cards with Bank of America, so we have Shop Safe again. We have been using Shop Safe for years and have a comfort level with its idiosyncrasies. Each purchase counts for cash back as well.
I also enrolled the BA card in Android Pay. I don't have a comfort level with PayPal as I've heard too many stories about lack of customer support. I regularly purchase electronic hardware direct from China and want control of how long the credit card number stays open.

BofA emailed ShopSafe users (I haven't gotten it yet, possibly due to not having used it in quite a while) letting people know it's gone as of September 20th.
OTOH, Apple Card will generate virtual card numbers, so there's that (assuming you have an iPhone).

I like being able to use ShopSafe for those merchants who insist on auto renewing your membership as mentioned above. I wasn't planning on getting the Apple Card, but maybe I will now.

I got the email and was surprised of the short notice, just 2 weeks!?! Was ShopSafe too costly for BoA considering few people used it? Or maybe ShopSafe didn't have an easy way to implement their service since Flash is going away soon (in a year or so?).

I don't like Flash ever since Steve Jobs wrote up a public statement that Flash was bad, so I have not downloaded it on my computer. I use Flash on Chrome where I believe it's "sandboxed"?? I don't know how Chrome does it or what it's called (sandboxing?), but Chrome lets you use Flash while not needing to download Flash. I assume I'm not exposed to the same vulnerabilities because I haven't actually downloaded Flash??
