This thread is a continuation of the discussion posted here from 12.08.2012 - 5.13.2014: Barclays Arrival/Arrival Cards (1.05%/2.1% travel credits)

Current offer for Arrival Plus is 70K pts w/$5K spend & AF waived 1st year.

Barclays says that you earn “miles” but you’re actually earning cash back with the card since you can’t transfer your Barclays miles to airlines. But you can redeem them for statement credits at 0.5 cents per mile (poor value) or 1.05 cent per mile if you redeem for travel.

You get 5% of your miles back if you redeem for travel, so 40,000 miles gets you $400 towards travel and 2,000 miles back (5% of your miles back). You must have at least 10K 'miles' in your acct if you wish to redeem as a travel credit. 2500 'miles' can be redeemed for a stmt credit though.

If you want, you can redeem miles to cover a portion of a travel charge instead of the full amount. For example, if you have 80k miles and a $740 airline charge, you can choose to redeem just 70k to cover $700 of the charge.

You earn 2X miles on all purchases, so you’re effectively getting 2% cash back for each purchase. But since you get 5% of your miles back when you redeem for travel, this is effectively a 2.1% cash back card when miles are redeemed for travel.

This makes the Barclaycard Arrival PlusTM World Elite MasterCard® (with 2.1% cash back for travel) better than the Capital One Venture card which offers only 2 miles per $1 or 2% cash back, only if you spend $30k+ per year after first year, because Arrival Plus AF is $30 more than Venture.

If you receive a call from 302-255-8000 after applying for this or any other Barclay's card, it is a legit number! You can also call them back directly at 866-951-1437.

I believe he is referring to the 10% rebate on the redemption. You can clean out the points on the final redemption (hotel) but then that redemption would still generate 10% rebate and that rebate would be impossible to redeem - unless you downgrade it to the non plus version and then top it off to $25 threshold to redeem it.

Or put it that way, you could downgrade the card to clean out the point balance with the much less requirement of $25. Then X the downgraded card and start all over in the future.

Barclaycard Arrival + No Downgrade option?

I got my annual fee last month so I called to downgrade and she said I had no downgrade offers.

I guess my only option is keep or cancel?

Any update on this? Did you call back?

I'm hoping that I can downgrade my Arrival+ in 2018 to liquidate about $26 in rewards remaining.

If there's a chance the downgrade won't work, maybe I'll leave enough points with my larger redemption so that I can just do something for $100 and not risk losing $25...

Called twice, no option to downgrade my A+ to any other product. Have slightly over 10k pts in the account, is there a travel related product I can redeem my points against? Thank you!

Buy a ticket from one of those airlines that if you cancel you dont lose the value which is just kept in your travel bank for future use up to 12 months in the future.
Think Southwest, Alaska, may be JetBlue also.

I would argue that the travel bank dollars do NOT have the same value as the equivalent number of USD. In fact, they are even less valuable than gift cards for the same amount, because the latter can be freely transferred and usually do not expire. Markets value airline gift cards in the range 82-88% of face.
Therefore, expect to have a substantial chunk of value to be wiped out by converting legal tender to travel bank (or any other store credit).

In our example, one should only buy tix that are fully refundable to the original form of payment (many airlines offer them).

So what do you do after you redeem for the purchase and refund the ticket? Ask for a credit refund check? They're Ok with that if so? My AF posts in less than 2 weeks and I don't want to pay an AF.

Put more spending on the card before the redemption to offset the expected credit and get higher redemption (calculate everything carefully).
If you can't do it, the bank will refund your credit balance (but may not like you afterwards).

The bank does not crawl back your redemption made on the canceled ticket?

In my experience as long as there's a travel charge over $100, it's eligible for a single redemption for 120 days no matter what. It can be an error charge, that was refunded within seconds. It will still appear as eligible for redemption.
Since eligibility is apparently unaffected by cancellation etc, there's nothing to claw back.

Thanks. I'm going to try downgrading. The regular Arrival still has the 5% back on redemptions right?

Canceling my Barclay Arrival Plus; spending points before closing

So my first statement was 11/24/2016. I'm at the point of getting an annual fee I don't wanna pay, so I'm gonna close this account. However, I still have 11368 points to spend before I close. I did a quick check; I can use them to get gift cards at a ...... rate of 5,000pts for $25, or I could apply to statement credit (For travel purchase) 10,000 for $100.

I would prefer to get the statement credit for travel, I'll be able to use the card for a hotel on the 11th... so I'm cutting it really close to the 1 year mark.

What is the best way for me to maximize these points and close the account without getting hit for the $89 annual fee? Do these point transfer anywhere or anything like that?
