We can try Macy's, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, and a few other big box retailers over the next few weeks, and I can report back.

Do you know if it's chip and PIN or chip and signature by chance?

Small question, what is FD pads? A acquirer or a type of pin pads?

FirstData is a terminal manufacturer, and they advertise DCC as an option on their website.

Australian cards should be chip-and-PIN by now. Popeyes is definitely looking like a candidate for dinner Sunday evening for PIN + DCC test. :D

IIRC even with PIN I don't think it asks for confirmation of the amount, at least at the Asian store with FD100 + FD35s. But it might be different for non-US cards if DCC's enabled.

I'll assume the stomach-over-counter posture from percysmith and make sure the cashier doesn't blindly press buttons if DCC is an option. I might have to play around with this to know what to expect.

BTW, "later" turned out to be a long while and the "service information" slip went missing in the meantime, but since no one else has put one up yet, here's a Japanese DCC slip:

Looks ugly...

It's like it's for small businesses, doesn't it?

Did you get this to yourself? Did you choose the CAD of your own will?

I've been playing around with their other demos at https://www.firstdata.com/demos/terminal_demos/ and know how I can tell which ones are US specific? (Hint: the PIN entry screens aren't on the US ones when demoing EMV.)

Pretty much.

Yep- that time I did. It printed a rate reference slip, asked me to select yes/no to the CAD rate given on the PIN pad, and I selected "yes".

DCC isn't something to worry about in Japan- yet. At least if J-MUPS is the acquirer and you're using a chip card you will be given a choice on the PIN pad.

Even with Canadian FX fee of 2.5% you lost out 1% at the very least (though there are FX free cards)

Yes, jamar only did this to see how it would work if you read the post from mid-January. I'm glad to know that a choice is offered, unlike in Mainland China where it's like pulling teeth or some places where you tick the box on the receipt and the receipt goes into a black hole like at Greyhound Cafe in HK.

I'm non-resident, so my options are limited. TD was the easiest way for me to get a PIN-priority card, and the issue this time was the way they do foreign currency conversion. Their T&C states:

If you use the Account to make
Purchases or obtain Cash Advances in U.S. Dollars, Euros, Great
British Pounds, Australian Dollars, or Mexican Pesos, the foreign
currency will be converted directly to Canadian Dollars before it is
recorded in the Account. If you use the Account to make Purchases
or obtain Cash Advances in any other foreign currency, the currency
will be first converted to U.S. Dollars and then to Canadian Dollars
before it is recorded in the Account.
And they tack on 2.5% both times. I have it mostly in case I bump into a PIN-required situation (mostly in the UK/Eurozone, so it would indeed only be 2.5% and I'd take the hit to avoid merchant trouble or waiting in line), though once I got home I was also putting non-essential purchases on it in what is essentially a forex bet. The C$ seems to have bottomed out relative to the US$ so that's the end of that, though.

I stayed at Marriott hotel in Jaipur India in December. The hotel printed a receipt which showed both the converted USD total and the local currency total. I ticked the local currency total. But I did not see that the second slip they attached to my receipt did not show the tick mark on local currency. I had made sure I had taken a photograph of the one I gave them with my signature. No surprises but Marriott India charged me under DCC method. So this is clearly a fraud. This was a business trip, but I still do not want this type of fraud to continue. The card I used was a Sams Synchrony Master Card. What are my options here?
