Google Wallet Card
This is interesting. Looks like Google may be releasing a new product to compete with Wallaby. Depending on how this operates, this could be great news for those of us with many credit cards (and who don't want to pay the annual fee for Wallaby).
The rumor also mentions the ability to add/withdraw funds, which may add a new tool to our mileage-generating kits. I guess we'll have to wait and see what the Ts&Cs are upon launch.

Still a pretty interesting idea, and great for travel. You can bring the card with you, and change it to whichever card you want by logging into your Google wallet account. If you're like me and have 15-20 cards this is a great addition to your travel toolkit.

Interesting, but it doesn't seem to have the same function as Wallaby (automatically selecting which account to charge to based on rewards category).

I just don't see mobile payments taking off in the US, at least not yet.
It's everywhere in Europe and in Asia (maybe because they're used to using them everyday on mass transit?), but the response has so far been lukewarm in North America where we're comfortable with the dip-and-go from the gas pump.
Back in May, Google admitted that Google Wallet was a dud. I can't help but wonder if Google started off Google Wallet in Europe and Asia where NFC payments are the norm, maybe they could've gotten to a better start though.

Speaking of Asia, I'm surprised Google Wallet didn't release a FeliCa-capable version of their app. It's been around a lot longer and already has its own Android extensions.

Folks who have used wallet on their Android:
When you make a purchase with Google wallet for say food. And it gets charged to credit card 1, will it show up as a google payment on your credit card or as a food purchase?
If former, then using this wont be as fruitful as you wont get points/bonuses?

It's obviously possible technologically for the card reader to read the card, contact Wallaby, who then sends back another card number and bank to be charged. But I don't see how that works without EITHER the POS terminals not reading the card number off the card itself, OR the banks cooperating with Wallaby to allow "pass-through" transactions.
And I don't see why a bank would welcome customers leaving their cards and systems behind.

That's why Google Wallet tell you that you will receive category bonuses, but not merchant-specific bonuses, for your spending.

My understanding is it shows up as a payment from Google, but is coded with the correct merchant category (similar to how Paypal tags payment with the correct merchant category).

That'd be an interesting twist if Google plays the middle man (they pay the merchant, then charge the user). Theoretically, they could develop a system where you pre-set which cards you want to be charged based on the merchant category. Would not be the best system when it comes to minimum spends, but would be great otherwise.

I'm wondering if we will be able to select which card to charge after we have already made the purchase. That is, could we make the purchase, go home, and then change the card we used? There is some language in the rumors that suggests that *might* be possible, but I'm probably being to hopeful.
