Best card for gas?

I'm wondering what the best card for gas and groceries is? How does the cash back work or will do you just receive it in points?

any card works for gas. What i've done is buy costco cash cards for gas w/ credit card. if i have a spending requirement, i'll buy $500-1000 in costco cash card to use for gas.

I think gas cards work best for the gas if you're looking for cashback. Some offer up to 5%. If you mean a mile or point card, Amex Hilton pays 6 points for gas and supermarkets among other categories.

I'm looking for one with good cash back. What about the Amex blue cash preferred or the pen fed platinum?

There are several cards that earn 5% back on gas. Quite a few people on FT carry the older PenFed Cash Rewards card for 5% on gas, paid each statement.

However, unless you buy a lot of gas, you'd be better off looking for the best signup bonus across all cards. For example, there are several cards offering bonuses easily worth $750+ right now. Will you be buying more than $15k of gas in the near future? That's something on the order of 125 tanks for most people.

Nope. I suppose I will be using my CSP I just opened for gas. That will help me reach my $3,000 in 3 months requirement anyway for 40,000 points. Thanks!

AMEX Blue Cash Preferred gives 3% cash back for gas. However, if your local grocery stores sell gas cards, then you can get 6% cash back that way. My local grocery store has gas stations at many of its supermarkets. Not only do I buy its gas/gift cards and get 6% cash back, this chain offers an additional .03 off for using their gas/gift cards. So, basically I am getting 7% off (at least until AMEX starts limiting how much cash back you can get via groceries next year).

The Chase Ink Bold gives 2 points per dollar for gas. That's a minimum of 2% but can be much more valuable transferring to a hotel or airline program. As as I get one, it will become my main gas card.

^ Same strategy I use, but my grocery store gives a $0.12 per gallon discount when I swipe the grocery store gift cards I buy with 6% cashback using Amex Blue Cash Preferred. Too bad they are going to start capping the 6% back.

...and add in the 7% annual rewards dividend and you're doing well with the CSP!
