Bonus Thresholds and returns

I may be in a situation where I will be a bit short of a bonus threshold come December 31. Is there a general rule as to what credit card companies do if you buy something for $2-3k sometime in December to go over the bonus threshold and return it sometime in January? Do you keep your threshold bonus?

It is a good idea to meet spend before the credit for the return goes through. What some do is buy a refundable ticket far in advance. Then meet the spend before the credit goes through for cancelling the ticket. Usually not a problem with that.

Or why not meet spend with Amazon Payments? Look at the thread for "getting spending up without the mint" in milebuzz.

An even better way to do it "under the radar" is to buy it, then return it in a billing period when you have charges greater than the credit.
