New to Churning

Hi All,

I am new to churning. I started today and applied for the Chase United MileagePlus Explorer Card (We seem to end up using United when we travel). My wife signed up for the Chase British Airways Visa Signature Card. I was going to sign up for it as well but feared that was too many for one day. We are trying to go to Brazil. Right now, I am thinking that we will make the MileagePlus card our main card to use for expenses. Any advice or am I going about this the wrong way?

Welcome to Flyertalk TigerEH! Always nice to see a new member join our community.

Where are you based?

How aggressive do you want to be aka how many CC applications do you want?

If you are coming from east coast you already have enough for the both of your to go to Sao Paulo and back using Avios points. I am assuming you applied for the 100k offer?

Is there a particular reason why you chose MileagePlus card as your everyday spend card?

There are plenty of Cash back cards or proprietary cards that offer "bonus categories" on spend besides airline related purchases.

For a beginner you are off to a good start. Keep learning and reading threads in our community.

Before you know it you will have more miles than you will know what to do with.

-Thanks. Glad to be here.
-Based out of RDU.
-I would not mind applying for two more cards. I just do not want to mess up my credit too bad by applying for too many cards.
-My wife applied for the Chase BA card, so we are going to get at least 50,000 avios. I was going to apply for it as well so that we will have 100,000 avios combined, but I stopped because I want to get another Chase card-the Sapphire Preferred. Wasn't sure if I could get both and still get the promo. With 50,000 avios, do I have enough to get to Brazil?
-I thought that by chosing the MileagePlus card I could put all my purchases on that card and gain points, or miles, without having to rely on promos. Is there a better card to use for everyday spending? I had been using the Discover Miles and Chase Freedom before I learned about all of this. It was taking forever to accumulate points.

Sapphire preferred + chase freedom is better. You earn 2 pts/$ on travel/dining and can transfer the points (including your freedom points if you have any) to united miles 1:1 instantly.

+1 and if you can find one off the threads with the good sign up bonuses all the better. I would wait 30+ days between Chase apps. Credit cards don't really hurt your credit score. It will drop 5-8 points after a app. but it will come back in 30 days. Also with a higher amount of credit your utilization should go down(unless you spend more) and more often you end up with a better credit score. Also having a car and or house loan helps. They look at more than just credit cards. Sign up with Credit Karma to keep track of it.
