Quick question about mileage CC balances...

First of all this is my first post so if this is in the wrong forum please feel free to move it. I am new to the mileage game and in the past month and a half I have received the Chase SW card and the Delta Amex. I have already fulfilled the requirements for the initial signup bonuses: 50,000 RR points for SW and 30,000 SM for Delta. Both have been credited to my RR and SM accounts.

Now I want to make all of my purchases on these cards to accrue as many miles as I can. I will pay the balances off monthly to avoid paying interest. My question is this: Does a balance have to pass a statement date before miles are credited or is it credited immediately after purchase? For example, both cards give 1 mile per $ on general purchases. Let's say I charge $500 on one of them and pay it off about a week later online. Do I still get the 500 miles or RR points if I pay the balance off before statement date or do I need to wait for the statement to actually arrive before paying it off?

Thanks in advance for any info on this or any other info you could provide a newbie for getting the most out of these two cards.

On the three cards I have (1 from Chase, 2 from Citi) miles post to your ff accounts a few days after the statement date.

Welcome to FT! You're in the right forum. For most credit cards, it will post sometime in the statement period following the one in which you passed the threshold. Having said that, I did have a couple (don't remember which ones) that took an extra billing cycle. They likely had a cut-off where, if you hadn't passed it by a certain point in the current cycle, it would have to wait for the next.

Thanks for the welcome! I get what you are saying about "when" they post but if you pay them off before statement date will they still post later even if they were paid off early? I am the kind of person who hates for a balance to get big. I would love to pay the balances off about once a week if I knew the miles would still post later.

Welcome to FT, claydough12!

It doesn't matter when you pay off the card. The points will post sometime after the statement closes for the month.

Good question - it is a mixed bag, some pay now, some pay after the statement and some don't pay unless you have a statement and won't create a statement if you have a zero balance (paid the account off early). The last is USBank and the LAN card as I recall.

Interesting. I didn't realize there were banks out there that did things differently. In the OP's case, both Chase and Amex will post after the statement closes and the amount of miles will be based on the amount of money spent during the statement period minus any chargebacks/refunds.

and some will leave a .99 balance. Then after a statement or two the .99 will be dropped off.

Welcome to flyertalk!

For the most part (I have chase, amex, citi, barclays) they post shortly after the statement end date, but I believe that capital one venture posts when the purchase is made.
