We got our upgrade… quite simple, actually.
  • First we made the request using the process on United’s website. After submitting, a confirmation message appeared, though I wasn’t entirely confident that Copa had approved yet.
  • Next, I navigated back to my reservation on Copa’s website and entered my PNR and last name to bring up the reservation. Unlike previously, a message was displayed indicating that the reservation required review by a Copa and that I should reach out to their call center.
  • After a couple of selections (I called the US office), I was routed to an agent who requested the reservation number and my name, as well as the origin and destinations on the ticket.
  • She asked and put me on hold for a few minutes. When she returned, she confirmed the upgrade and waited while I verified by entering the PNR and my last name again in the browser.
  • Bingo…
Very good customer experience, in my estimation. And I can be a stickler.

I am seeing neither R nor Z on EF, and Copa does not appear on list of airlines in "Award & Upgrade" search.... what am i doing wrong?

R is clearly listed on your screenshot for the Copa flights. They do not publish Z availability. If you want to confirm if Z is available, you need to call Copa and ask if upgrade space / Z is available for X flights on Y dates

Had the same experience yesterday. Easy process overall. Had to wait about 10 minutes with Copa but that's fractions less than dealing with UA!!!!

Considering purchasing a one-way UA ticket (IAD-MCO-PTY). Both the UA and CM segments have PZ and Z availability, respectively. Will it be a single 40 PlusPoints to upgrade the whole itinerary or is it 60 PlusPoints (20 for UA and 40 for CM)?
