COPA Upgrade certs on UA and/or LH operated flights?

Anyone know where to find the rules and process for applying COPA Regional and/or Global Upgrade Certificates on UA and LH?
I have a 30+ trip coming up from SJO (Costa Rica) to BLR (Bengaluru, India) using a combination of UA and LH, and I would love to apply some of my Copa Pres.Platinum upgrade certificates to make the trip more comfortable.
I think I need to book on a certain fare class, but which are those classes? How are the certificates applied?
