I honestly don't think that buying UAUA as is would be a good deal for anyone.
Most definitely they would need to kill the labor contracts, thin the ranks, thin the routes, ground stacks of inefficient planes, etc. The goal of buying UA is taking its cornerstone routes and rights and the collection of widebodies and 757s that would instantly fall into CO's hands while vaporizing a key TATL and Transpac competitor - and prepping for an all-out battle with the 'new' Delta.

[QUOTE=rolov;11997601]CO will not be allowed to join *A so they will form their own alliance with
QR, EK, VS, EY and AR[/QUOTE

FI would be a nice partner to have also
They do not seem to partner with any other airlines

Still hate to see CO leave SkyTeam, I much prefer Delta to US/UA for domestic travel.

The CO forum is no place for politics...that's what OMNI is for

Mods - can we please change the title of this thread? What it says has not happened. The post just links to news that was published here a long time ago under the guise of a provocative and untrue title. Judging by the comments above, it has succeeded in provoking and will not lead anywhere worthwhile.

I think that the Justice Department should play a vital role, and that it should now be closely looking at Delta, and giving 18 months notice to terminate the Delta immunity with Air France/KLM or face a lawsuit.

The five years starts when CO actually joins Star, so it runs through at least October 2014, depending on when CO officially joins.

Am I the only one who sees the irony in making a political comment, immediately followed by a reminder that political comments should be taken to OMNI?

You're assuming that US won't be toast by then.

+1 wrt the commies in the DoJ, more pandering to the unions. At this point, either the airlines gain some pricing power or they're all going to be state wards anyways.

Is it an unreasonable assumption to think that US will or will not last another five years? The structure will be there but it will be under a different name. Someone will buy the debt, erase the name, and run that route network the way it should be run.

Is Not Possible. If Teh Gubmint doesn't want worldwide cooperation between the carriers, there is no way that the same Gubmint would allow the same two carriers to form a big giant Voltron-like behemoth a la Northwelta. It would create the consolidation that the industry needs, but it would create too much consolidation for the Administration's taste. This Admin is fervently anti-big business, and a CO-UA merge would create something well beyond the size that they believe to be good.

Just my own speculation, but I think now that the libs are in charge, the only way UA and CO combine is if UA liquidates and CO wins an overly drawn out process to buy the distressed assets. More of the people's money will get spent to prop up UA before a merger or LBO goes thru...because Obama will see it as another chance to put a company into a union's hands.
