That depends completely on what days of the week you fly. It is common for Monday, Thursday, and Friday flights to be sold out in first with paid F and Y-up's, especially now that there are only two flights per day.

Just got a 3-day window UG on CLE - SJU for saturday morning ........prolly not an elite heavy flight ........ it seems the key to EUA is to only fly to/from places no one else wants to be :)

CLE could be difficult. I did not get a redeye EUA on a Friday last year. In fact the plane was 100% full. As for this year my wife and I have been very lucky. We are both Plat and have been upgraded LAX-EWR and EWR-LAX. I never been so fortunate. I am afraid our luck has run out as the next two LAX-EWR-LAX does not look so good.

LAX is hard to get upgrade. My DO flight is 4 booked in F with 12 seats open, but CO won't upgrade me 5 days out.
All my CO upgrades from LAX are either same day or battleground.
ONT or SNA has better chance to get upgrade.

NWA-PLAT Feb 4, 2009 11:02 am

Which is easier to get the upgrade to IAH or EWR...ONT or SNA? Sounds like LAX is the most difficult.

I've been upgraded most of the time from SNA as a NW PE, but have now just switched to CO. My first test out of SNA as a CO PE will be 18-Feb. I could fly out of ONT just as easy.

Good point. With CO's generous Y/B-Up policy, you do get a lot of them, especially out of the West Coast.

The Y/B-UP prioritization made it to the list of questions/issues to discuss at the DO. I've got some ideas on this that we can all talk about down there.

No chance for Companion Upgrade

I'm flying down 2/5 on 657 PHL - IAH at 12:05. Today at 11:00 AM, F was booked 10 out of 16 and I had been EUA'd 2 days ago. Today at 1:00 PM, F was completely full with 3 on the SB list. I thought they usually held at least a couple seats for revenue/companion upgrades/battlefield. Seems like they've given away every F seat during OLCI so now Ms. GadFly and I will be separated (unless there's a no-show and I can get her first on the list when we get to PHL.

My expereince is SNA. I have received upgrade on SNA- EWR, which is almost impossible for LAX -EWR.
ONT -IAH is easier on the red eyes and morning flights, but the 11:35 AM one is tough. Lots of regular.

It's only been about the last three years, approximately, that LAX-IAH EUAs have been hard to come by. Previously, EUAs were going at the usual rate for Plat which would be about 70% overall. Of course, depending on flight times, etc. YMMV.

This is par for the course with CO - weren't you warned about it when you decided to switch?

I was, but was also told that the upgrade rate would be about 70%. Obviously, I don't plan on getting EUA'd on every flight. But, from the look of it, the rate will be close to 0%. And if that really is the case, then why bother? Right?

I realize I'm just ranting right now. Obviously, I'll ride it out and see what happens since I've already got Platinum for 2010 in the bag. But if I really am not going to be sitting up front much, then I don't have a choice but to find another carrier.

Very strange.

I got a EUA 2 days before my flight from LAX - IAH.

Then on the morning of the flight they downsized the aircraft from a 757-300 to a 737.

I got a call from Continental asking me if I wanted to change to a later flight and receive $250 credit voucher a first class seat.

When I looked at the seat map a few hours before the flight I showed seat 4D.

When I checked into the ticket counter I still showed first class.

When I went to board the flight at the gate the agent said oops I've been re-assigned to coach - seat 10D.

I didn't want to hold up the line so I went to the counter - after about 10 minutes I got re-assigned to row 8 and given a $200 credit.

A 70% upgrade rate for a West Coast flyer seems strikingly wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some West Coast CO Plats who average 10% or lower. CO is a good airline if you are buying full-Y or F but it is not the right airline for anyone looking for regular upgrades.

Well, we will see what happens for the rest of the year.
