Quote: Well the *A program is optional but its a little better than the new ST program. UA started using it at first but it was a complete cluster to use it then they stopped... it was supposed to stop only temporarily but it never has returned... interesting other *A programs can upgrade on UA flights but UA MP members can't upgrade other *A flights other than LH.

Hopefully CO opts into the *A program. Its available on the top 2 Y fares rather than just full Y... its been a while since I looked since UA stopped offering it but LO used to offer really good B fares to Europe in comparison to the other members. They have a new C class that doesn't look too bad, certainly no worse than CO BF.

I find this new ST program to be a bit weak too since its only Y fares and for CO its only really adding AF & DL... we've been able to upgrade NW and KL tickets for a while now.
It was just because UA's IT dept is hired out of I T T and has no clue

Quote: So apparently, it's only on Full Y fares and no others? bummer.
Well, would you rather have upgrades be limited to only full Y fares, or to all fares but with a co-pay based on the level of fare?

The latter, by far. With the former I have to buy a Y fare and hope for the upgrade. Otherwise I'm stuck with a very expensive coach seat. With the latter if I'm stuck in Y at least I didn't overpay for the luxury.

At least on the routes I fly I've yet to see the co-pay be as much as the difference between the cheap fare in the full Y fare... the only thing I'm really giving up is the easy changeability.

Good, then I guess y'all agree that the co-pay system is actually a pretty good one when compared with the alternative...
It's unfortunate SkyTeam went with the alternative for this particular program. Perhaps intra-carrier co-pays would just be too complicated to process.

Thumbs down on the full Y fare. As mentioned, discounted business can occasionally be cheaper than full Y.

Plus you run the risk of overpaying for a Y fare and an upgrade not clearing.

The *A program (to the extent carriers participate; UA is out for the time being) is more generous.

Wonder if on AF you can upgrade with miles from C to F (on the few routes they have F ... good food!)
