It'll drop well below $50 the day the US congress announces the mandate that the auto industry convert 50% of production to alternative fule automobiles as part of the bail out package.

I'll take your bet.

It will go below 50, when Bush announces an all out drilling program and nuclear energy plants in order to crush the cartel. Bush has a one-in-a-lifetime chance to make the cartel irrelevant. But, being the pansy that he is, Bush wont go for it

In the current economic climate, it would be foolish for anyone who's getting up there in age to mess with their retirement money in such a foolhardy way...

US Constitution 101:

Before a president signs a bill, who must pass it?

I am anti Bush too, but Congress should take a lot of blame for stuff like this.
What the President could use, is line item veto.
That should cut a lot of pork

You've got to be kidding when you think that any of this will have any impact on energy costs for the next several years. Eventually, nukes and alternative energy sources may play a huge role. Not so with drilling, wells take years to come online and even if we drill everywhere we can in our continental waters, the additional reserves are a very small percentage of our overall energy use. Me thinks you have been listening too much to Sarah Palin.

US Constitution 102: it'll need an Amendment to work the way that Clinton originally wanted it to. I would love to see it as well, but a quick reading of the Presentment Clause makes the line-item go .

It also bears mentioning that, after all the wrangling about fuel surcharges and higher fees, now that fuel costs are lower and the recession is here, fares are much, much lower. For instance, in January there's:

IAH-SAN-IAH: $218
IAH-BOS-IAH: $304
IAH-DTW-IAH: $188
IAH-SFO-IAH: $228
IAH-PDX/SEA-IAH: $238
IAH-LHR-IAH: $609 all-in
IAH-CDG-IAH: $661 all-in
IAH-AMS-IAH: $727 all-in
etc.

Unreal!

I drove a UHaul from IAH to San Diego and the gas alone was $500.
