SMS Trip Alert

In my CO profile, my phone is configured as a mobile device and the SMS option is checked. When I get a trip alert, I get both a SMS text AND a voice call.

Does anyone know if there is a way to stop the voice call but still get the SMS message?

Change your trip alert settings.
  1. Home
  2. My Account
  3. Profile
  4. E-mail Settings
  5. TripAlert

..and what options do I need to configure? I've selected to receive phone alerts and selected the phone device that I have configured for SMS, but that generates both a voice call and the SMS.

I want true SMS, not email sent as text message.

Not only that, but apparently Continental doesn't realize that mobile carriers charge $0.50 ea. to send/recv SMS (text msgs) while overseas.

Since 1 CO Trip Notification = 10 SMS (due to character count limitations) that comes to $5 per leg...and, yeah, there's that annoying telephone call to top it off.

The notifications section of the website is so obnoxiously organized.

If instead of SMS you sign up for it as an email (e.g. [email protected]) it will only come as one picture message rather than being broken up. (not sure if that helps cost, but it is what it is.)

Hi skearney00, this is possible, but unfortunately the registration process for SMS TripAlerts isn't very intuitive at the moment. Here's how to do it:
  1. Go to continental.com. Sign in. Go to My Account.

  2. In the gray "Profile" box, select or add the phone number where you'd like to receive SMS messages. On the phone number page, select the device type to be a "Mobile Phone." When selecting this option, you'll be given a check the box beneath it that says "Send messages to this text-enabled/SMS device when available..." Check that box and save your settings.

  3. Go to "Manage Profile", which is also in the gray "Profile" box on the My Account page. On the manage profile page, under "E-mail Subscriptions & TripAlert" select "View TripAlert" settings. On the TripAlert settings page, select the Phone option and the phone number where you'd like to have the SMS messages sent. Save your settings.
When adding a phone number to your TripAlert settings, we'll always send TripAlerts via SMS instead of voice as long as you've specified that you want to receive SMS messages (i.e. step 2).

This set-up process can and will be improved at a future date.

Thanks for the reply, Scott. What you describe is how my profile is currently configured, but I still get both the voice and SMS. I will try deleting all my phones and reconfigure from scratch to see if that makes a difference.

I have mine set to get both SMS and voice calls. For awhile I was getting only calls, for awhile I was getting both SMS and calls, and on my last few trips, I have not received either.

Did setting this up from scratch work for you? It didn't help for me.

Don't know yet. I don't have another scheduled flight until the 4th holiday.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. As you may have gathered, this wasn't the indended design. We are researching this now, and in the mean time I'll welcome any examples you have (please PM me with your OnePass and confirmation number).
