I think this is a good idea..I think Pay by Weight is Fair..Airlines are in the business of carrying cargo..In the case of human cargo it just makes sense to pay by weight.

Im forced to carry and extra 50+ libs! Im 6'2 and 220 now I dont want the extra weight.
Maybe you might pay my overage for me ? or maybe you would like the diease im stuck with instead ? it includes a wheelchair too!

Sorry for your medical condition..but I dont think I should have to subsidize carrying your extra weight..If I ship a package thats 50 pounds overwight I will have to pay for it..If you carry 50 extra pounds on your person you should have to pay for it..IMHO..:-:

Well, it looks like CO is not going to be the market leader in this aspect of air travel. Check out this site for Derrie-Air -- Pack less, weigh less.

I'm sorry Mothura, but I have to agree. Although we are all sorry (and I hope I speak for all) that have the disease you describe, but why should the airlines who are clearly in a financial crisis be asked to pay for it? And in doing so, deprive the rest of us whatever amenities they eliminate to make up for it. It reminds me of the guy who tried to sue Southwest because they charged him for two tickets because he was too large to fit in one seat. I don't remember his specific circumstances, but I think he was just obese. Maybe they could have some sort of medical exemption, but it would probably just end up being abused like so many others.

Boston_Bulldog, I think you are wrong about the bag charges though. The airlines should still reward their elite customers with some sort of a tiered reduction of weight charges, based on elite level.

The whole concept only makes sense. For those who think the airlines shouldn't change with the times (and oil crisis), you're not paying attention to the radical changes that are taking place in the rest of your lives. Weight + fuel burn per mile = your fare.

aveRex Jun 10, 2008 10:36 pm

If I'm paying based on weight, would I receive more miles, both bonus and elite, based on my weight?

Fare classes should be computed based on where you weigh in, e.g.,
H for heavies (250 - 350 lbs) = Elite miles x2
M for you moderates (140-249 lbs) = Elite miles x 1
L for light weights ( <140 lbs) = Elite miles / 2 (50% qualification)

What do you think?

Can I get some witnesses in here? :D

aviators99 Jun 10, 2008 11:30 pm

It wouldn't make sense to get more miles based on your weight. The more you weigh, the more it costs the airline to transport you. It's practically a linear equation over some base amount. They would need to charge even more than they would otherwise charge per pound if they would also give you additional miles based on your weight offset charge.
