Using Miles for International Flight-Help

I am a Platinum member and want to use miles to fly from Newark to Rome in September. Ideally, I want to fly non-stop and I was leaving on Sept. 4 and returning on Sept 19. Unfortunately there are no 50,000 mile roundtrip tickets available (only the Easy Pass 100,00 miles)and I was told that they had not released these One Pass tix yet. My question is: When, if at all, can I expect them to release these tix? The tix are expensive to purchase ($1300) and I would love to use miles on this one. Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks.

Maybe never

You don't say when in September you want to go, or for how long, but I found standard seats on the non-stop DL flight JFK-FCO on the 9th and returning on the 23rd with a combination of AF/AZ no problem. Search the CO site using NYC as the deaparture point instead of EWR and you should see it all. Plenty of other return dates were also available, as were J options on some routes.

Also try http://www.nwa.com/jp/en/home.html for searching NWA/KLM options.

Hi aidanblake and welcome to FlyerTalk. Your subject is oft discussed on this board, and there are many theories.

Here's my experience: summer standard awards are hard to find. Though frustrating, it is often easier to get them closer to the departure date than months and months in advance.

Depending on your plans, it may serve you well to check nearby cities with low cost carrier (Easyjet, Ryan, etc.) or train service to Rome.

I am confident others will tell you why I'm wrong

Safe Travels!

The award calendar is showing availability for virtually every day in September for flights from NYC to AMS. And KLM is usually easy enough to get the intra-European legs with.

VS often has plenty of availability out of NYC to London, but this may be more of a hassle than going through AMS.

You will just have to force the agent to look. When they say, we only have EasyPass, say:

"Can you get me to Amsterdam? Or Paris? Or London?"

Then say:

"Are there any connecting flights from there on KLM? Or Air France? Or Alitalia?

If you need/want to fly on a non-stop, then you might be out of luck, but I would think you could get there via some routing.

What are you gonna do when he says he wants nonstop, and he wants to go out of EWR?

Seriously, though, welcome to FT!

What I would do in your situation is book one of the trips as posted above with one connection; then waitlist for the CO flight that you want. If/when they clear, you'll be good to go. And if not, one connection on a reward ticket isn't bad (and DL and AF have free drinks, CO does not).

Enjoy the trip!
