Upgrade on a "direct" flight

I've searched these forums, the internet, on Continental's website for the answer to this question, couldn't find it.
So, I have a flight coming up, IAH-ANC with a stop in SEA. It's a direct flight, same flight number. I'm gold on NW. How does the upgrading work? If there isn't a seat available out of IAH, can I get one out of SEA? What about the other way around, if there is one out of IAH but not out of SEA?
Then my other question, I'm flying ANC-MIA via SEA and IAH. The IAH-MIA flight had a schedule change so now I have 22 minutes in IAH. CO's website asks me if thats ok (there is no "no" button) would it hurt if I say continue and agree to it? Would they route me through EWR? The other option is the direct flight ANC-IAH, in which the questions above apply again. It only makes me lose 20 eqms or so on the direct flight, not a big deal. If it gives me a better chance of getting first being on a direct flight, I'll take it.
Thanks!
Edit: Just saw this thread. Looks like a seat has to be open on both flights to get the upgrade.

Thanks for searching alphaeagle ^
As I understand it both segments must be open for the upgrade to occur.
If you feel like trying you may be able to get a reservations agent to reissue your ticket as two segments (as oppose to the direct one) if you don't mind a) paying the additional tax and b) can persuade the agent to do so.
Good luck.

Regarding your schedule change... That's certainly not enough time to connect in IAH. Accept the schedule change (I know, there's not a "No" button) and call CO reservations. They're usually very accommodating when there's a schedule change. Ask them to route you through EWR or put you on the nonstop ANC-IAH (which would probably be ideal for you.)

Before you call about being re-routed, look at your options on CO or other airlines. A friend & I were on a direct YVR-IAH this summer at 130PM , when they moved it up to 1130AM about a month before the flight. I was not able to get to the airport that early (due to a cruise). My only CO options were wait for a red-eye at 9PM or until the 1130AM the next day. I needed to work the following day, so both options were poor. The agent tried to put me on the red-eye, but I asked to go out on NWA's flights, connecting in MSP. They didn't hesitate and thanked me for knowing my options prior to them looking them up.
I just did a random Tuesday in January (not knowing when you're flying) and you can go
NWA: ANC-SEA-(MSP OR DTW)-MIA
Delta: ANC-SLC-PHL-ATL-MIA, or several others
Alaska: ANC-SEA-MIA
If you look on CO for ANC-MIA, there are several options through SEA & IAH or SEA & EWR, so that could work. I would recommend against EWR if the travel is this winter due to weather delays.

Thanks for the info. I am going in March, the only non-stop flights from ANC are to SEA for that time period. There are plenty of options that would work for me, even more if I could be rerouted on Northwest or Alaska
. The direct flight is on a 757-200 which would be nice if I got upgraded. I'll figure out a few good options for me, then give them a call. Thanks again
