Question Upgrade on a "direct" flight

I've searched these forums, the internet, on Continental's website for the answer to this question, couldn't find it.
So, I have a flight coming up, IAH-ANC with a stop in SEA. It's a direct flight, same flight number. I'm gold on NW. How does the upgrading work? If there isn't a seat available out of IAH, can I get one out of SEA? What about the other way around, if there is one out of IAH but not out of SEA?

Then my other question, I'm flying ANC-MIA via SEA and IAH. The IAH-MIA flight had a schedule change so now I have 22 minutes in IAH. CO's website asks me if thats ok (there is no "no" button) would it hurt if I say continue and agree to it? Would they route me through EWR? The other option is the direct flight ANC-IAH, in which the questions above apply again. It only makes me lose 20 eqms or so on the direct flight, not a big deal. If it gives me a better chance of getting first being on a direct flight, I'll take it.

Thanks!

Edit: Just saw this thread. Looks like a seat has to be open on both flights to get the upgrade.
