Let me make sure I understand this.
Your flight was canceled, but they would not confirm you on the first flights that had seats because the right fare class was not available?
Is this the normal policy for elites on CO? I ask because I'm relocating back to the NYC area in the near future and considering how much of my business to give to CO. If this is standard policy, big strike against me flying CO.

With AA in cases of a cancelation, delays, a misconnect etc. you can have any available seat without regards to fare class. Quick call to res or help from an AAngle in the Admirals club gets me the seat I need.
Confirmed standby rules do apply of course if I opt to change flights due to a change in my schedule (not the airline's) or miss a flight, but that's not what I'm asking about.

It was snowing in PHL yesterday when we got to the airport early enough to ask if there were seats on the earlier plane to IAH. We got seats on the earlier plane!
[tangent]I got to BWI once (about 13 years ago) in a snowstorm right at my scheduled departure time on WN. Got to the gate just as they announced cancellation of my flight, so they put me on a flight scheduled for 3 hours EARLIER. When the snow let up an hour later, they called final call. I got on to find all the other pax had been sitting there the whole time.[/tangent]

Ah, thinks for the clarfication. I was worried this was the norm on CO. Havn't flown them enough in the last few years to know how they deal with these situations.

Of course if your flight is cancelled/severely delayed they'll rebook you without regard to fare class. But if the flight is full (as was the case with the OP), then the flight is full. AFAIK, you can't stand in the aisles on AA flights either...

True, but as an EXP I'll go to the top of the standby list. Each airline has it's nuances on how day of ops is handled. Trying to figure out what I might gain/loose by switching.

CO is fixing this as of next Wednesday so that a PLT will be at the top of the list (sortof - there is a lot of nuance and a silver Y trumps a Plat H, but it is mostly accurate) for irrops. If you're looking at a change for next year I wouldn't let this dissuade you.

But elite standby hasn't started yet, has it... I imagine you got someone's seat who just stayed home for snow, HausFrau. What was the hurry? 'Horns baseball season is still 3 months away.

As the mother and mother-in-law of 'Horns, I get to make the "snackage" for the football and baseball seasons. Gotta start planning the menus!
