You can always hold something online and call to have the agent append a segment. That would work for you in this situaiton.

Personally, I prefer searching online and calling to have them book all of it. Agents also let you hold for a few days, as opposed to the website (24 hours).

I just saw the note below on the NWA Japan site. Maybe this is true for CO too and it's just not mentioned. Still not user friendly but at least it makes sense.

The calendar reflects availability on Northwest & KLM flights only. Please see search results below for potential availability on these and our other partner airlines.

I'm almost certain that the CO color calendar includes other partners, as there are dates where only AF has availability and the colors are correct (use JFK-CDG 8/1/08 - 8/15/08 as a sample search to demonstrate it).
