CO used to have special reward levels for Plats (non-capacity controlled). I do not think the idea is too far out. CO Plats earn the miles by flying. Giving Plats a perk of lower levels - is very reasonable.
There might be a few business owners that are Plat and get lots of business miles from Amer Express - but I would say that is a small percent.
I know people who never buy a ticket and have no status and always fly FC. They use the zillion miles from their credit card used by their business. Are these really good CO customers - are the miles really worth that much?

In 1990 I believe that I got two first class tickets on CO to CNS, SYD-AKL, then back to the US for 180,000. That's 90,000 a ticket. CO did have decent first class international service. Then in 1999, 2 QF first class tickets at 125,000 each.
Pending the receipt of the 787s, why doesn't a SkyTeam partner put on a 767 or A330 from HNL-SYD when Air Canada terminates that service in December?

The problem with Hawaiian is that it is not a full SkyTeam partner. You can only earn and use miles on inter-island flights. The first class only has a 42 inch seat pitch. If DL, CO or NW put on HNL-SYD flight, I think there would be a lot of SkyTeam interest because the SkyTeam options to Australia are now very limited.
Does CO still hold the authority for this route?

The new QF levels seems pretty high. What is UA charging for F and J rewards on UA metal.
UA is J - 110,000 F-140,000
Going to the mentioned levels would be out of wack.

I believe it was 170K, so that was 85K per seat. The pitch was great and the seat was extra wide. On one trip for the IAH-HNL leg in the 747, which had a chef on board, we were met at our arriving flight from Florida by a red-coat who escorted us to the IAH-HNL flight.

If you were going to be pissed if the award jumped to 220k, how are you reacting to the reality that it jumped to 285k?!

sweet jesus!
that's a big increase. >100%.. I wonder if they're increasing the availability to go along with it... if they are more easily obtainable then its not necessarily so bad, even at 285k its a 'good redemption value' given the retail on QF F.

Actually, it seems that the old award schedule is in force until 2/14/08. So, as long as the booking and ticketing happens by that date, we should be able to use the old awards, right? IOW, it will be possible to travel under the old award until, roughly Feb. 2009, correct?

I wouldn't count on it. If anything, availability of QF awards seems to have decreased in the last few years.

Notice the new Qantas awards for travel between Australia and Asia/South Africa/Europe? Europe is sure a bargain at 375K miles for F.

These levels make the reward basically impractical to use. If you want to go to Australia - you are better off taking a different routing, via KE, for example, or even CO to CNS.
Availability is based on QF reward availability for QF members - so I do not see a change in availability. I have not seen FC for sometime and not on the LAX-MEL route (the first A380 route).
The bottom line - CO needs to resume flying to Australia - when they get more planes. Skyteam really needs a route from USA to SYD.
