Exit rows

Mrs. dan1977 just achieved silver status on continental. Is she able to book exit row seats online? I know US airways elite members are allowed to book exit rows online and I am not sure if Continental is the same. Thanks!

Dan,

Only Gold and Plat can reserve exit row seats online. She should however, be able to select these seats during online check in.

This page: http://www.continental.com/web/en-US...e/default.aspx

Gives the different benefits for each elite level.

Note however this page does not comment on exit rows. And (un)fortunately (for the OP) only Gold elites and up can select exit rows prior to OLCI. However the good news is that since these are only preselected by elites the chances of them opening at OLCI are pretty good since the platinums would be first on the EUA list.

As can any non-elite.

Congratulations, CO Silvers: you won't get upgraded and your chances of getting an exit row seat aren't any better than Joe Schmoe once-a-year-flyer.

Given the number of silver elites though I can see where there should be at least some benefit to higher elites since your chances of an EUA even as a plat aren't great on most routes. At least this way if you can plan your travel in advance you can secure a good economy seat.

Maybe worth noting, if you do any flying on NW, NW and CO elites (even at the Silver level) can select some of the exit row seats at booking. Some others are saved for coach select which you can select at no cost as elite during OLCI.

I know this comment will be unpopular with Silvers and non-elites, but I am delighted that only Plats and Golds can pre reserve Exit Seats.

On my upcoming trip to SJC this weekend, I had ZERO difficulty booking exit row seats. Wide open. If CO wants to keep me as Platinum (I am deciding between UA 1K and CO Plat for 2008), this would be one of the major reasons I would stay. We all know how abysmal CO non exit coach is. If Silvers can prebook, then the chances of a seat open for me will be much reduced (as there are many many Silvers--one trip to Asia on a H fare or more puts you almost at Silver).

I've found that not everyone likes the exit row. Some don't like the added level of responsibility.

Having actually opened a plug type window exit (737-300/500, 757, 767)during the DO, I'm now more concerned that most of the people sitting in the exit seats don't have the ability to open it and to place it in the proper place. I dislike the exit row only because I'm tired of sitting with the first time flyers who switched there from the very last row. As a Silver, and before as a non-elite, I've never had a problem getting an exit row if I choose to during OLCI, this includes EWR-LAX in July so I have no issue with the current policy.

My parents are both Gold, but I never book them in the exit rows. But at the next DO, I'll try to bring them to the training tour with all the exit doors and let them try to open them. If they can still do it, maybe they can sit there too!

The 737 NG's wing exits are easy to open. Pop the cover, pull the red handle and quickly let go before it pulls you out the door as it swings upward very quickly and with some force.

The doors are about 40 pounds and some had trouble lifting them. The flight attendant doing the demonstration for us said that most anyone can handle it with adrenaline.

How tough were they to detach from the plane?
