I am off to have dinner and then watch The Guess Who in concert.

Hope the Boxers remembered that the DO was in IAH and not IAD tonight

:D

Viva la PWP!

Viva la PWP!

Make silent footsteps. (That was their song, yeah?)

An economist explained to me once that playing the lottery can be rational even with the odds against you. Reason is that the utility from hitting the jackpot times the (tiny) odds of doing so can be greater than the dis-utility from losing the buck or two on the ticket, times the (high) odds of not winning.

This is a difference between risk-seeking and risk-adverse behavior. I could diagram if you wish ...

Diagrams of utility functions makes my spider sense tingle.

I posted my own and called it Suckerton instead of Tuckerton, even though I live in Little Egg Harbor...the two backwater hellholes share a zipcode.

Jersey has some quaint zip code ways. E.g., Point Pleasant Beach and Bay Head share a common zip code. And both have some identically named streets. It's completely up to the competence of the USPS staff to route the mail properly.

Sorry, no. CA is not a PB state. If you live near the OR or AZ border you could buy a ticket just across the border. I've heard that when the jackpot gets high those border stores get very busy.

No state income tax for Tennessee residents (although dividends / interest state tax would come into play).

AZ charges state income tax for lottery winnings so I figure a $99.6M prize would net around $60M after taxes.

I'd be more than willing to pay the tax on $193 million.

The $193M jackpot is an estimated amount after being paid out over 25 years in the form of an annuity. The annuity payment increases slightly each year so you'd actually end up paying more taxes on the prize itself over the 25 year life of the annuity. Most financial advisers recommend taking the lower lump sum payment, getting the initial tax obligation out of the way, and investing the balance.

Me too. My wife is watching a DVR's Grey's Anatomy, the kids are asleep, and I don't have work to do. May have to go see what sporting events are on, but the Box is preferable.

CO 1E posted my zipcode.

The lab is suffering from serious retrieving deficiency because of the rain and is standing here barking, and will continue to do so until I go out and throw his toy a couple times, in spite of the fact that it is now completely dark. But somehow it's just easier. Back in a minute.

The greater Phoenix area has an interesting zip code structure. The entire area is on a grid with Central Avenue and Washington as the 0/0 point. All zip codes west of Central are odd numbered and all to the east are even. You can look at any zip code and know right away which side of town someone lives on.

Lab is doing his job. And I'm going to walk down the hill to the convenience store with some dollar coins.

That's exactly right. Dogs, and horses, are happiest when they have a job, and get to do it. About 10 tosses, and now he's happy again.
