Both Dell & HP have "Higher Education student/faculty/staff" discounts available on their websites. You would be eligible for that now. It can definitely save you a few dollars.

It's also a good idea to keep an eye on TechBargains.com (both the desktop section on the left side and the main body). Dell is known for their sales and coupon codes and combining both can result in some pretty good deals.

Yes, it is fine to go with a Dell.
A modern day laptop should be able to handle video editing without any problem. Sure, the fan(s) will spin up a bit but it should remain cool and handle the rendering just fine. My MB has never had issues rendering video. I'll never understand why people are so quick to write off switching to a Mac, but to each his own. :)

I received the Dell desktop I ordered for work a couple of weeks ago and have been very happy. It's definitely on the higher end of their line but all of their desktops have been reliable.
If you're looking to do audio/video editing I would recommend something with a really nice processor and a hefty amount of RAM.

I just ordered a Dell Studio XPS9000 yesterday. My company will pay $1,200 every three years for personal equipment as a benefit- so I decided to get a much better one that I would have otherwise. This is a desktop for home use (to attach to the two 24" HD Dell monitors I have - pricing mistake at Dell.com :) )
For laptops, I do love my MacBookPro. We are a mixed MacOS/Windows household - and for now, that works out pretty well. (**I did talk the s/o out of an iPad though :) Small victories here and there along the way... ) |

I don't write of Macs. It's simply ease/laziness of sticking to one platform and the cost point with Apples. The way my desk top's fans crank up and scream after rendering a video for 45 minutes I often wonder how a laptop can keep up with it.

Off the top of my head, there are a few ways to quickly scan through pictures in a folder.
First, you can switch to Cover Flow view in Finder (selected in the screen shot below) and scroll through the images. http://img.skitch.com/20100404-pne8b...r6ftwjrei2.jpg You can also select everything in the folder (Command + A) and open them all in Preview (Command + O) and use the arrow keys to navigate through each of them. I think I used that view before, I will have to explore some more. |

Do you think 8G of ram is good enough? |

8GB should be fine. I think 8GB and higher requires the 64-bit OS, just keep that in mind.
Olton Hall - what kind of video editing are you planning on doing? If it's just consumer level stuff, 8GB will be more than enough (and possibly even overkill). |

Ahem, yeah, extra RAM is never a bad thing. |

When the computer is being funded by an employer, of course not. If it's a personal expense then, sadly, overkill can exist. |

ˇFeliz Pascua!
I made a mistake in going to Bolivia. Cuzco is incredible. I packed as much sightseeing as I could into 3 hours, and am definitely coming back at some point. Got lucky with the weather... mostly sunny with patchy clouds made for good photo conditions (it was rainy and cloudy here when I had a shorter stopover on teh way to Bolivia, so I didn´t leave the airport). Unfortunately, Aerosur has swapped a 732 onto the CUZ-LPB route, which meant no 727. I at least managed to snag a photo of their regional F product during boarding. Snagged a copy of the in-flight magazine with details on their new Super Torisimo product (a 744 between VVI-MAD). They must have gotten an ex-VS bird, because it has herringbone biz (with a bar), Y+, and whY. They also offer his and hers PJs (blue or pink) featuring a toro logo over the breast pocket with 747-400 inscribed below it. Looks like it would be a pretty cool way to add a new line to teh FM. I wonder what the going rate for Aerosur points is in CC? :D sfogate, I saw your posty yesterday, and haz you an alpaca scarf... Navy Blue. |
Bora Bora
Have any of you been to Bora Bora? I got my new HHonors card, and the insert has a pic of the Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort & Spa.... it looks incredible.
I did a quick search on Expedia, and from CLE it only gave me CLE-LAX on CO, LAX to PPT on AF, and then Air Tahiti. Have any of you done that kind of trip? Ten year anniversary is coming up in July... that might be a nice surprise trip. |
