Avoiding MilePass charges???

Is there any way to avoid paying to receive/give MilesPass miles from a colleague? It seems that the costs per CA 500 miles soon adds up and the total for a ticket from UK to US is almost the same as buying a ticket itself.

Any advice please?

Just have the colleague redeem the miles for a ticket in your name. Of course, that won't let you combine the miles in two accounts, but it will let you get the ticket without the crazy transfer fees.
