An airship is a blimp, not a jet aircraft.

It's a standard term used in the industry, heard it used in exactly that context many times before...

yes, that's what i said above. dictionary.com agreed.

i was initially confused by the use of the term "ship." i was wondering if CO got into the cruise business without me noticing. plus, i didn't expect a cruiseship in boise or or bismark or wherever BIS is.

someone replied that "ship" was short for "airship."

but, dictionary.com says airship is a blimp.

so, is CO in the blimp business?

For crying out loud... CO calls their planes "ships" when referring to a specific airplane. As in "Ship 283". American calls it the fleet number, CO calls it ship number. It's on the nosegear door and on a placard on the cockpit door. Some of the placards even SAY "Ship 123" on them.

I also think that they are referred to in the feminine, as in "that 777, she's a fine ship".

Or "that CRJ, she's a bucket".

Interesting they didn't go higher than FL 250:

Probably related to the problem that caused the diversion. They went slow also, taking 3 hours for the 1194 mile flight.

Once I was on a EWR-ORD flight that flew at 18,000', but that was because of headwinds at higher altitudes. I've been higher then that on the ground.
