Once somebody is assigned a seat, they generally won't take it away. Elites don't get to boot non-elites from their seats.
The only times I can think of that anyone is typically moved from their preassigned seats are:
Other folks might be able to think of a few other scenarios, but in general, once you have a seat reservation, you don't get moved.
The only times I can think of that anyone is typically moved from their preassigned seats are:
- Equipment change (non-elites will generally be reseated in the "white" seats, and pax whose seat numbers don't exist any more will be reseated elsewhere)
- Non-qualifyied pax in exit row (kids, disabled pax, don't speak English, etc.)
- Too many lap babies in one seating section (Boeing narrowbodies have 4 oxygen masks for each 3 seat section, so if two lap babies are seated in the same row on the same side of the aisle, one will need to move)
- Disabled person requests accessible seating, but all accessible seats are already taken
- Passengers in same PNR have "split" their seats (if you pick aisle/window and leave the middle seat open between you, sometimes they'll move one of you to the middle seat so you're sitting together)
- Passenger doesn't show up at the gate before it's time to process standbys
Other folks might be able to think of a few other scenarios, but in general, once you have a seat reservation, you don't get moved.

I called DL & was told a family had requested to be seated together, and as I was travelling solo, they gave them my seat. But they didn't assign me any other seat and now all that was left were middles seats in the rear!!
I ended up cancelling the whole trip just before departure, so it was a moot point-- but just beware.

On a brighter note, if you want to travel to NCE next year, I bet Continental will offer service there. I was just looking at what was going on with Barcelona; it's quite impressive. I bet somewhere in the south of France must be a target destination for '07.
