Canceling a Leg
I have a round trip to IAH scheduled next week. My plans have changed, instead of flying home, I'm going to another city. The new flight is on another airline, paid for by my client. Continental 1-800 says to simply cancel the return leg once I arrive and IAH. They said I would be able to use this at a future date. I'm assuming next time I travel to IAH, I could simply purchase a one way ticket and use this leg for return travel. I've never done this before and am wondering:
1- Will this actually work
2- How do I use the canceled leg for future travel

E.g., for the cheapest and most expensive published fares on this route (I randomly looked at Sep 1):

Go to Travelocity's Fare Lister for fare rules if you're curious.

All very helpful, thank you.
I'm not sure if I would ever use this, as CMH-IAH isn't a normal route for me, I'm usually connecting thru there. I'll cancel the return once I arrive. It might be worth something, it might not. At least it won't cost me anything to do it.

First, what fare are you flying?
As TrayflowinUK pointed out, some fares have change fees. If you don't want to change, DO NOT contact a CO agent, as they may charge you the difference between an one-way fare and your current discount fare.
Just throw away the return, if you're flying a discount fare, and have no firm plan to use the return flight in the near future.
